Stack gas analysers and sampling equipment can reportedly be protected from the damaging effects of ammonium salts with new AS-Series ammonia scrubbers from Omnifit (Plate 11). Manufactured by American company PermaPure, the new scrubbers are described as rugged and long-lasting, ensuring that maintenance time is kept to a minimum and replacement costs are reduced.

Ammonia is introduced into industrial waste gases to reduce nitrogen oxide as part of the DeNOx process, but it often causes problems for emissions monitoring instruments. Residual ammonia in stack gases reacts with sulphur dioxide to form ammonium salts that precipitate from the gas phase when the sample cools. The salts then accumulate in sample lines and analysers, clogging and damaging components and causing maintenance headaches.
AS-Series ammonia scrubbers are said to selectively remove ammonia from stack gas samples, eliminating damage to the gas analysis system. The rugged scrubber housing is permanently mounted within the gas sample stream, and may be released and removed without tools to replace the proprietary ammonia scrubbing media. Recently improved to extend maintenance intervals between replacements, the scrubbing media undergoes a visible change as it becomes exhausted, making it easy to determine when it should be replaced.
