Following an extremely interesting and informative Training Network Meeting, the training arm of the British Coatings Federation – the Training Alliance for Surface Coatings NTO – held its Annual Awards Ceremony on board the HQS Wellington recently. Over 40 people from the coatings industry attended.

Silver medals have been specially struck to commemorate the achievement of young people completing their training programmes under the surface coatings Modern Apprenticeship framework. Individuals usually take between three to four years to complete, having achieved NVQ levels 2 and 3 in surface coatings, processing, laboratory operations, as well as having completed an Open Tech module and other forms of training. Stephen Falder of H. Marcel Guest as chairman of TASC NTO presented the first five Advanced Modern Apprenticeship Awards to Gareth Allen of Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings, Stuart Byers and Anthony Madl of Akzo Nobel International Coatings, and Mark Wilson and David Best of PRC Desoto.

The chairman was particularly delighted to present these students with their silver medal and spoke warmly of the amount of work carried out by both the apprentices and the host companies to achieve the completion of these qualifications – a major achievement for the individuals and a significant benefit to the host companies through highly motivated and skilled staff.

The President's Award was initiated in 1985. This award is for students who have completed a minimum of two 60-hour modules within one year. The student must be nominated by the tutor and supported by their industrial counsellor. The student must complete all the work including the practical exercises. Mr Peter Rieck (Sonneborn and Rieck), president of the Federation, gave the President's Award to Scott Halkett of Spencers of Aberdeen. Scott had achieved a merit and a distinction in the two modules he has completed. He was recruited by Spencers from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, as a chemistry graduate in 1996.

Two students from Dupont Powder coatings, Lisa Halpin and Sarah Parrott, attended to collect their Open Tech awards from the President.
