US security printers combine to establish national standards organization

Keywords: Printing industry, Standards

A group of US printing industry professionals have combined to form a non-profit organization aimed at establishing standards and classifications for security printers and suppliers.

The North American Security Printing Organization (NASPO) was formally announced at the Advanced Security Printing Symposium, in Pittsburgh.

According to NASPO Chairman Michael O’Neil, the organization was formed to combat the rising threat of identity theft and financial fraud, as well as to give credibility to the US security printing industry.

Vice President of operations, Richard D. Warner notes that the industry is regulated in most other countries, but as this is not the case in the US, any company can call itself a security printer and therefore create and sell fake documents without regard for the consequences.

Each NASPO member must fulfil and maintain a set of consensus standards and operational protocols. Certification will be renewed on an annual basis so security print customers can be assured of the quality of the service they receive from any NASPO certified printer.
