Chance and Hunt has been appointed by 20 Microns to market and distribute china clay, talc, baryte and mica as part of its expanding service to the coatings sector.

Chance and Hunt has entered this competitive sector with the clear intention of sourcing lower cost products without compromising quality. The Indian producer, 20 Microns, is an established supplier to their sister Azelis Group company in Italy and has proved itself to be a reliable source of top quality product. India's largest producer of white minerals is 20 Microns with an output of 180,000 tons per year. The company has five regional divisions each with its own production, commercial distribution and technical facilities and prides itself on stringent quality control procedures using sophisticated instrumentation to ensure product of the highest quality and consistency. Their teams of chemists, geologists and engineers undertake continuous product development programmes to ensure that customers needs are anticipated and met.

China clay, or hydrous aluminosilicate, is used in many applications including paints, rubber, plastics, adhesives, inks and coatings. In paints it gives an excellent titanium dioxide extension, together with improved colour, gloss control, dispersion and stain resistance. When used in the manufacture of adhesives its benefits include enhanced wet tack, increased viscosity, quicker drying speed and reduced cost. China clay enhances colour development in inks improves holdout to prevent strikethrough.

Microns china clay consists of very fine particles for ease of dispersion and has high brightness for improved gloss. Its high hiding strength means it can be used to partially replace titanium dioxide and it has excellent outdoor durability.

Included in the many applications of talc are latex paints, decorative imulsion paints, high gloss enamels and printing inks. Talc consists of the mineral hydrated magnesium silicate in a powder form and included in its properties are lamellarity, softness, chemical inertness, affinity for organic chemicals and whiteness.

Using talc in paint reduces the quantity of pigments required and helps in suspending other pigments. It also improves the durability of the paint, enhances smoothness during application and increases corrosion resistance properties. Talc is used in plastics and gives an excellent thermal resistance, electrical resistance and smoothness.

The 20 Microns talc range is available in three different particle sizes and each grade is divided into three types according to the dry brightness.

Two grades of baryte are available from 20 Microns. One is recommended for standard powder coatings and the second is a higher grade used in the manufacture of higher quality powder coatings. Chance & Hunt already has experience and technical expertise in the application of bartyes products, and the 20 Microns products broadens the level of service available to this sector of the coatings industry.

The 20 Microns mica range increases the options for coatings manufacturers requiring reinforcing pigments to reduce cracking and peeling. It also brightens the tone of coloured pigments, transmitting and reflecting light in a proven decorative effect. Mica is an inert material which resists damage from heat and light. It also provides resistance to destructive sun light, moisture, atmospheric gases and it decreases blistering and staining. Typical applications include aluminium paints, automotive paints, anticorrosive paints, cement paints, marine paints and fire-resistant paints.

Mica is also used in the manufacture of plastics and imparts properties such as crack and scratch resistance, heat resistance, vibration proofing and electric non-conductance.

Joan Traynor, Sales And Marketing Director at C&H welcomes the 20 Microns products as a valuable addition to the company's coatings business. “C&H Coatings has established a strong presence within the industry and this range of quality products from 20 Microns greatly enhances the options available to our customers.”
