CARB to revise methodology for estimating emissions from thinning and cleanup solvents used in architectural coatings

Keywords: Solvents, Coatings technology, Architecture

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) will be revising the methodology for estimating emissions from thinning and cleanup solvents used with architectural coatings. The revised methodology is based on a research project that was funded by CARB and completed in 2004.

A summary of the revised methodology is available on the CARB web site www.arb.ca.gov/coatings/arch/thinningandcleanupcalc.pdf. The complete research report is also available at: www.arb.ca.gov/research/abstracts/00-314.htm

In 2005, the CARB conducted an Architectural Coatings Survey. CARB staff is currently processing the data from this survey and will be compiling the data in a survey report. The survey report will include estimated emissions from thinning and cleanup solvents that are associated with architectural coatings, based on the revised methodology mentioned above.
