AMC colourprime gives time and material savings in CT finishing

Commercial Transport (CT) finishers and refinishes are continually looking to enhance the quality, colour and gloss properties of vehicle paintwork, at the same time speeding process times, introducing materials savings and reducing VOC emissions. To meet the demands of this highly discerning market, leading CT paint systems producer HMG Paints has introduced a pre-coloured version of its renowned AMC4 primer-surfacer. Called AMC ColourPrime, it is a high quality 2k polyurethane wet-on-wet primer available in a range of ready-mixed colours and thousands of bespoke shades, formulated to match the topcoat and aid the covering power of even the most difficult colours. In 5l and 2l pack sizes, it is the perfect solution to time and material savings in CT paintshops.

In an era of lead-free paints and “cleaner” colours and metallics containing transparent pigments, shade-matched AMC ColourPrime assists CT finishers to achieve topcoat opacity quicker and easier, at the same time providing enhanced gloss hold-out and tougher resistance to minor mechanical damage. Where stone chips and scratches do penetrate the topcoat, the AMC ColourPrime undercoat disguises the damage, helping to maintain aesthetics and defer the need for refurbishment work, again saving on time and materials.

Manchester-based HMG Paints is the number one paint supplier to the UK bus & coach industry and claims a growing share of the commercial vehicle refinishing market, with a network of specialist CT product distributors across the country, each of which is equipped for mixing bespoke AMC ColourPrime colours on site. The new formulation is based on the highly regarded AMC4 2k primer, a compliant wet-on-wet PC surfacer that can be overcoated with HMG 2k topcoats, like Acrythane XSC98, without flatting and enabling ultimate gloss finishes in the most cost-efficient process times.

Sprayed over the prep coat, the primer-surfacer performs a number of key functions in any CT multi-coat paint system, helping to provide adhesion between the primer and the topcoat, enhance corrosion protection of the metallic substrate, act as a filling medium to cover minor flaws and achieve an optimum smooth surface for overcoating, and absorb mechanical loads from stone chips. Colour- matched AMC ColourPrime additionally enables easier coverage by the topcoat, thereby reducing the amount of paint required and consequent VOC emissions, and enhances the final colour of the vehicle finish, especially when using basecoats and metallics containing transparent pigments.

AMC ColourPrime can be spray applied to steel and aluminium bodywork, pre-coated with HMG 2k etch primer, and onto lightly-sanded existing paintwork or factory finishes. It can be wet-on-wet overcoated using an HMG 2k topcoat within around 30 minutes, without flatting, its slight sheen finish giving very low sinkage and ensuring outstanding gloss levels. Fully PG6/34 and CE42 compliant, it is backed by a range of thinners, for retaining a wet edge at various working temperatures, and hardener options for small, medium and large jobs, high build applications and working in colder ambient conditions.

Offered in nine pre-mix standard transport colours and bespoke BSI, RAL and OEM shades, AMC ColourPrime is now available either direct from the manufacturer or through its specialist CT product distributors.
