We are delighted to introduce this special edition of Quality in Ageing and Older Adults focused on the grant programme supported by the Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland (CARDI).
CARDI’s underlying purpose is to improve the lives of the ever increasing number of older people in Ireland by supporting high quality and policy relevant research.
Our strategy, launched in 2008, sets out a framework for moving ageing research forward based on a growing recognition of both the value of a coordinated and facilitated approach to ageing research and the opportunities of working across the island of Ireland.
Early in 2009, CARDI launched a grant programme focused on bringing together the research community and relevant players from government, voluntary and community sector and older people themselves so that those with skills and knowledge on ageing could focus on research priorities.
The grant programme encouraged researchers to focus on issues at the heart of enabling our ageing population to live life to the full. The research briefings produced from each of the projects give those designing and developing services and facilities for older people access to latest research thinking about these issues.
We were delighted that this new, innovative and often challenging grant programme attracted such a high level of interest. Many new contacts have been made across sectors, disciplines and on both sides of the border.
This edition highlights the significant role research on ageing can play in formulating appropriate policies and services for our ageing population. The articles within provide a snapshot of the diversity of the 25 research projects supported by CARDI.
Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the steering group of CARDI for their time and dedication, the Director of CARDI for his leadership and the staff team for their enthusiasm. We are also grateful for financial support from The Atlantic Philanthropies, the Research and Development Office for Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland and the Department of Health and Children in Dublin, without which our work would not be possible.
