Reviews the barriers that make it difficult for Chinese managers to become global leaders and advises on how to overcome these. Divides the barriers into those relating to Chinese business practices – a short term focus on results, lack of experience in developing global leadership programmes, and leadership selection methods; those relating to Chinese managers themselves – reluctance to leave their families and poor communication skills; and, lastly those relating to the Chinese culture – the value placed on introverted personality traits, and a tendency to undervalue strategic thinking, influencing skills and the ability to articulate a strong vision. Sets out a training and development programme that would overcome these barriers and demonstrates its value with two short case studies of successful Chinese global managers.
