Sira's new sensors research programmes will create jobs and wealth

Sira Ltd has launched a new collaborative research programme, which is designed to translate some of the technical priorities identified by the Government's Foresight initiative into R&D activity right across British industry, by building on one of the country's technical strengths sensor development.

Under the umbrella title, Collaborations for Success, Sira will co-ordinate activities for three consortia involving existing Sira member companies and new members, which will pursue opportunities in the field of sensors and sensory information. The Foresight study panels identified these as "crucial in all sectors wealth creation, sustainable development and quality of life."

Speaking at a London conference to announce the launch of the programme, Lord Sainsbury, Minister for Science, said: "Sira is to be congratulated in taking up the challenge of turning Foresight priorities into action, in a way which looks set to generate job opportunities for scientists and engineers. This programme will also enable UK companies to take full advantage of European funding which will be available under the Framework V programme. I urge businesses to get involved."

The three priority areas are: industry and the environment, security and observation and earth observation. See feature article "Foresight launches three sensor programmes" in this issue.
