New emissivity enhancer improves bright metal temperature measurement

Keywords Thermometers, Accuracy, Measurement, Metals

Land Infrared has launched an emissivity enhancer that improves the accuracy of System 4 and UNO short wavelength thermometers in the temperature measurement of bright metal strip.

A further development of the ground-breaking "Gold Cup" surface pyrometer the company introduced more than 50 years ago, the new emissivity enhancer ensures accurate temperature measurement - continuously and without contact.

It uses a unique non-spherical reflector - currently the subject of a patent application - that gives enhanced emissivity values at a distance of 30mm from the target surface by maximising the number of reflections between the surface and the reflector (see Plate 2).

Intended for use on low emissivity rnaterials, the enhancer is especially suitable for flat, bright rolled finished metals such as stainless and bright annealed steels, aluminium, copper, nickel, brass and many other surfaces normally considered difficult to measure.

The shape of the reflector has been engineered for optimum performance at 30mm clearance, supplemented by a reflective flange that minimises wide angle reflections from hot backgrounds.

Suitable for any System 4 or UNO thermometer with an SG1 or SF1 close-up lens, the emissivity enhancer is housed in an accurate alignment jacket to facilitate sighting adjustments, and is supplied complete with an alignment bracket for easy distance and/or angle setting.

The accurate alignment jacket also has integral water/air cooling and is designed to accept a standard System 4 back cap.
