A new TSI personal multi-gas detector is now available from Bristol Industrial & Research Associates who are manufacturers and suppliers of a wide range of scientific instruments for environmental, research and industrial applications (see Plate 11).

The "ProtectairTM" is a compact yet rugged "monitoring" instrument to keep the user constantly aware of potentially dangerous solutions, particularly in confined areas where gas could be present. It is a data logging, multi-gas monitor two standard sensors with the option to add on two more. The instrument comes standard with an oxygen sensor and a combustible sensor. Additional sensors for other toxic gases such as hydrogen sulphide carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide are available. With two-level audible and visual alarms, the "Protectair™" is ideal for use in a wide number of industries.

It also comes complete with the Windows®-based Trakpro&#153 data analysis software package. This is compatible with TSI's indoor air quality instruments providing a truly integrated software tool for a wide range of health and safety measurement applications.

Other operating features include: a four-line backlit LCD display that keeps the user informed during normal use with user prompts for easy set-up and calibration. Data management is comprehensive and easy to use. The operator can select up to 20 different users for shared instruments of shift work; up to 20 different locations for logging different locations in survey work and up to 40 hours continuous data logging. RFI shielding is excellent with the user never having to worry about using a walkie-talkie or other device when near the instrument. A stainless steel case provides rugged protection and shields the electronics from EMI. The alkaline battery power pack means the instrument runs for 20 hours on six AA-size alkaline batteries although a rechargeable NiMH battery pack is also available.
