We are told that the construction industry is in its healthiest state for ten years and that the workload will grow. Activity is up by 4.5 per cent in Wales and the South West, 2 per cent in Northern Ireland, 0.2 per cent in the North, 0.9 per cent in the South East. The private commercial sector is by far the strongest, followed by industrial property.

The RICS is looking after your/our (depends on who you are) interests. The budget proposals will adversely affect professional practices, which in turn will destroy their commercial competitiveness. The proposal is to withdraw the practice which permits some businesses to pay tax on profits based on fees paid. This would mean tax on "business in progress". The RICS has recommended further measures, applicable to work carried out on a time basis and success-related/transaction fees ­ watch this space.
