This is precisely what it says it is, a directory consisting essentially of advertising material held together by a series of articles. As the title suggests, it is published annually. Having said that it is a most useful publication and the articles are of a high standard. Every surveyor should learn "Ten ways to ruin an old building" in the same way that he should have learned the Ten Commandments and should not be allowed to practise until he can recite them. Stephen Boniface's article on "Mortgage valuations on historic buildings", a subject which poses many problems for surveyors, particularly as many surveyors do not understand the question. Disability access in historic buildings is discussed; this is particularly important in view of the latest revision to the Building Regulations. Brian Ridout as ever provides a short but worthwhile article on "The durability and decay of oak".
In short, a useful book for all surveyors and others engaged in conservation with some timely reminders.
