Brunel's first iron bridge discovered

Keywords: Industrial heritage

English Heritage and Westminster City Council have revealed how the chance discovery of previously unknown notes in Isambard Kingdom Brunel's private workbooks has led to the dramatic discovery and rescue of Brunel's first iron bridge. The bridge was hidden within a modern brick road bridge over the Grand Union Canal near Paddington Station, London. Its discovery was made just in time to avoid its loss due to demolition of the road bridge. The iron bridge has been dismantled and it is hoped that it will be erected in a new position as a footbridge.
