In the dawn of a new decade may I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year. This year and indeed decade is pivotal in a number of areas that will affect the surveying field. Sustainability and environmental concerns will be a top priority for many researchers and practitioners. The housing market continues to slump, but is showing signs of improvement. Overall there is much scope for researchers and practitioners to publish their work in this journal and I strongly encourage you all to do so.

The journal will once again have five issues this year. The first of which is a special issue containing papers from the Third Conference on Building Pathology and Rehabilitation, held at the University of Porto in Portugal between the 18-20 March 2009.

More regular issues are planned as well as another special issue to be edited by Sara Wilkinson from Deakin University in Australia. The theme of this special issue has yet to be finalised. Watch out for further announcements in the usual places. Please continue to submit any submissions to either Mark Shelbourn or Mike Hoxley, the regular editors of the journal.

I would also like to welcome Aimee Wood onto the Structural Survey team. She is part of the Emerald team and is the Publisher for the journal; we are looking forward to working with you Aimee.
