Downturn in the CE sector looks set to worsen

Article Type: Newsbriefs From: Structural Survey, Volume 28, Issue 3

Keywords: Civil engineering, Recession

The Civil Engineering Contractors Association has warned that thousands of jobs are in danger as the downturn in the sector looks set to worsen. The latest results of the CECA Workload Trends Survey indicate that the civil engineering sector is now entering a second leg downwards. The survey – one of the longest-standing reviews of industry sentiment in the construction sector – had raised hopes that the low point for the sector had been reached when it was last carried out in July 2009. While members at the time reported declining workloads with expectations that this decline would continue in the year to come, the pace of decline in these future workloads had lessened, raising hopes of a return to growth for the sector. But these hopes have been dashed with the latest survey, as expectations of future workloads have collapsed. Half of all firms now expect to have less work this time next year, while just nine per cent expect increased workloads.
