SMEMA and IPC boards give preliminary approval for merger plans

Keywords IPC, Merger, SMEMA

Pending approval from their membership, the Surface Mount Equipment Manufacturers' Association's (SMEMA) board of directors has voted to merge with the IPC. The IPC board of directors approved the merger and creation of an IPC/SMEMA Council with the IPC governance structure at their meeting in June 1998. Discussions continue on the details of implementing the agreed affiliation.

The agreement between the two organizations preserves the identity of SMEMA with the creation of the IPC/SMEMA Council. IPC has agreed to provide the needed staff and support to promote the council's activities. The agreement also states that all SMEMA members will become members of the IPC, and that SMEMA will have representation on the IPC board of directors.

For their part, SMEMA has committed to seek member approval for the merger within 60 days and then to dissolve itself as a professional trade association if the membership approves of the merger. They have also committed to play an active role in IPC programs including the IPC/SMEMA Council, standards and market research programs. The affiliation with IPC received strong member support at the recent SMEMA general membership meeting held at SMI in late August, and the SMEMA board is recommending that members approve a "Member Resolution" recently mailed to them.
