This is the paperback issue of a book first published in 1998. It contains many practical guidelines and rules of thumb to aid software designers in developing user-oriented human-computer interfaces. This is very important: the procedures, formats and wording with which a computer system communicates with its users can have an enormous effect on the ease of learning and use, and hence the productivity of the system. This book presents specific, implementable suggestions drawn from diverse sources and based upon human performance research, human factors engineering principles, and practical experience. Its emphasis is on software-related design issues, though some guidelines on the selection of input and output device hardware are included. Each guideline is numbered and titled to make the book easy to use as a design reference. Many of the guidelines are accompanied by examples to make them clear and concrete, and exceptions and trade-offs are also considered for many of them.
