Integration
Some time ago we decided that we would not develop any more software – we would always (wow, that's a big word!) go for packaged software. We further decided that we would generally go for "best of breed" within a reasonably tight set of constraints to aid integration. In practice – in spite of our best intentions – this has led to huge efforts to integrate separate packages – almost (but not quite) as much as if we had continued to develop in-house. I guess it is true that "you get what you pay for" – if you want high quality, integrated systems, you end up paying one way or another.
