About the Authors

Neal M. Ashkanasy, OAM, PhD, is Professor of Management in the UQ Business School at The University of Queensland, Australia. He studies emotion in organizations, leadership, culture, ethical behavior, and the physical environment of work. He has published in journals such as the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Management, and the Journal of Applied Psychology. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Organizational Behavior and Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Review and Academy of Management Learning and Education. He is currently Associate Editor for Emotion Review and Series Editor for Research on Emotion in Organizations. He is the founder and administrator of the Emonet Listserv. In 2017, he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) and in 2019 he was named the Academy of Management's Managerial and Organizational Psychology Division Distinguished Scholar.

Cynthia J. Barboza-Wilkes recently earned her PhD in Public Policy and Management at the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California and will be joining the US Office of Evaluation Sciences as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Her work explores intersectional experiences in the workplace with a focus on organizational justice and diversity management. As an interdisciplinary scholar, she weaves together insights from organizational behavior, critical race theory, and emotional labor scholarship to look at the ways in which organizations reproduce inequity. Her goal is to enhance our understanding of the differential interpersonal burdens experienced by diverse employees navigating social and institutional power asymmetries.

Anthony Belluccia earned his PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the Florida Institute of Technology. His research areas include workplace mind wandering, industrial training, and emotions at work. He has served as project manager for various training projects, including leadership development programs, a cross-cultural competence training at an international airport, and a life skills training series that helped house and employ hundreds of adults with developmental disabilities. As an Adjunct Professor, he has taught introductory psychology courses. He is currently working in a director role for a Silicon Valley based consulting company.

Min-Kyu Choi is a graduate student at the Griffith Business School, Griffith University. He holds a BA (hons) in Human Resource Management from Griffith University. His research interest circles around human resource management and organizational psychology. Thereby, he focuses on the human behaviors and internal motives derived by emotion and affect within the work context.

Brian J. Collins is a Professor of Management at the University of Southern Mississippi. He received his PhD in Organizational Behavior from the University of Alabama. Dr Collins has published research in several journals, including the Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Organizational Research Methods, Journal of Business Research, and The Leadership Quarterly.

Patrick D. Converse is a Professor in the School of Psychology at the Florida Institute of Technology. He received a BA in Psychology from the State University of New York, Fredonia, and an MA and PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Michigan State University. His research is in the areas of work motivation, focusing on self-regulatory processes, and personnel selection, focusing on personality assessment.

Caitlin Fulcher is a Psychologist currently working in organizational development. She completed her Master of Organizational Psychology at the University of Queensland. Her thesis, under the supervision of Professor Neal Ashkanasy, focused on supervisory gaslighting and the effects this has on employee affective commitment. She has an interest in leadership and personality and is passionate about the application of research to psychological practice. Caitlin also holds a Bachelor of Psychological Science with First Class Honors from the University of Queensland.

Erin Gallagher is a University Lecturer with a PhD in Industrial Organizational Psychology whose research interests include Human Capital Analytics, Program Evaluation, Unconscious Biases, and Social Comparison and Competition in the workplace, among others. Her research has been presented at regional, national, and international conferences. Erin has taught at universities in both Australia and the United States focusing on: Performance Leadership, Personnel Psychology, Human Resource Management, Statistics, Data Analysis, and Research Methods. She is currently employed as a Lecturer in the management cluster of the business school at University of Queensland's St. Lucia campus. Her work history outside of teaching includes appointments and projects spanning both private and public sector organizations including HR consulting firms, the Department of Education, the Department of Corrections, and the US Military. Erin is a member of the Academy of Management, Society for Industrial Organizational Psychologists, Society for Human Resource Management, Institute of Analytics Professionals of Australia, and has professional certification from the Australian Human Resources Institute.

Sonia Maria Guedes Gondim is a retired Full Professor at the Institute of Psychology at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBa), working in the graduate studies program at this institution. She is a CNPq level 1D productivity grant holder. She coordinates the Emotions, Feelings, and Affects in Work Contexts research group (emotrab.ufba.br), developing research on emotional labor, emotion regulation, intergroup emotions, and socioemotional competencies. Alan J. Hudson is a doctoral student at the Griffith Business School, Griffith University. Alan's dissertation examines the emotional experiences of leaders when organizational change is imminent. Key focus of the research is how leaders manage these emotions and the subsequent outcomes for employees. Research is conducted through qualitative interviews and quantitative methods. Alan has a Bachelor in Information Communication Technology from Queensland University of Technology and a Master's in Project Management from University of South Australia. Alan's interest in the topic comes from years of leadership experience across both the private and public sector.

Ronald H. Humphrey is a Distinguished Professor of Leadership in the Lancaster University Management School (UK). Ron is dedicated to helping people develop an empathic and emotionally intelligent leadership style. He and his team have gathered the largest amount of independent evidence on the validity of emotional intelligence in the workplace. He also studies emotional labor, authentic leadership, servant leadership, personality traits, leadership emergence, identity theory, emotions in the workplace, and other topics. He has published two books, Effective Leadership: Theories, Cases, and Applications and Affect and Emotion: New Directions in Management Theory and Research (editor).

Peter J. Jordan is a Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Griffith Business School, Griffith University, Australia. Peter has published in leading international journals including the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Organizational Behavior, Human Relations, and The Leadership Quarterly. He has also been awarded grant funding for his research from the Australian Research Council. Peter is on the editorial board of several journals. His current research interests include emotional intelligence, discrete emotions in organizations, leadership and teams, and employee entitlement in organizations. Prior to working at Griffith University, he worked for the Federal Government in strategic and operational planning.

Stacey R. Kessler is an Associate Professor of Management at Kennesaw State University – Michael J. Coles College of Business. Dr Kessler received her PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of South Florida and her BA from Rutgers University. Her research interests include counterproductive work behavior (deviant behaviors in the workplace), leadership, and organizational climate. She is the author of peer-reviewed journal articles in outlets such as the International Journal of Management Reviews, the Journal of Organizational Behavior, and the Journal of Management. Dr Kessler's research has been cited in mainstream media articles as well as in the best-selling book, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, by Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook. Dr Kessler has also been awarded grants related to the research and practice of leadership. She teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in both leadership and organizational behavior. Additionally, Dr Kessler has developed and led undergraduate and MBA courses in Thailand, Austria, Slovakia, Argentina, and Brazil. All courses centered on working cross-culturally with specific focuses on leadership, service learning, and cross-cultural communication. Dr Kessler also serves as a Senior Associate Editor of the journal Group and Organization Management as well as an Associate Editor at the journal Work and Stress. Finally, Dr Kessler has also consulted with a variety of organizations including the US Navy and Monster.com.

Sandra A. Lawrence graduated with a PhD from the University of Queensland in 2006 and is a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Governance and Public Policy at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. In her research, Dr Lawrence focuses on the role of human resource management (HRM), work teams, frontline managers, and employees themselves in optimizing employee and organizational performance. Dr Lawrence holds research expertise in the areas of HR functions and hospital clinical performance; workplace emotions and performance in work teams; frontline manager influence on employee behaviors and employees' EI; and emotional regulation in dealing with workplace anger. She has published her work in the Journal of Applied Psychology, the Journal of Organizational Behavior, and the International Journal of Management Reviews.

Thai V. Le earned his PhD in Public Policy and Management at the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California, where his research focused on issues of social equity. His work on diverging and racialized pathways to citizenship and immigrant integration in the United States was awarded the Henry Reining Jr. Award for Best Dissertation in Public Policy and Management. As a mixed-methods researcher, he utilizes statistical models, ethnographic practices, and spatial tools to study a range of issues, including immigrant integration, regressive and discriminatory local financing practices, the digital divide, emotional justice, and burnout among public sector workers. Thai is currently the Turpanjian Postdoctoral Fellow in Civil Society and Social Change at the Equity Research Institute at the University of Southern California, where his research explores the immigrant integration landscape in California to identify strategies in mobilizing and organizing hard-to-reach immigrant populations.

Katrina P. Merlini is a Researcher at the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and an Adjunct Professor for Florida Institute of Technology's Organizational Leadership MA program and George Mason University's Applied Industrial and Organizational Psychology MPS program. She received a BA in Psychology from the University at Albany, State University of New York, and an MS and PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Florida Institute of Technology. Her research is in the areas of work motivation, focusing on self-regulatory processes, workplace inclusion, and organizational leadership.

Timothy P. Munyon (PhD, Florida State University) is an Associate Professor of Management and the Ray and Joan Myatt Research Fellow at the Haslam College of Business, University of Tennessee. He is also a cofounder and current managing partner at Red Castle Human Capital, a workforce analytics company. Munyon's current research interests include team dynamics, organization theory, and political influences at work. His research has appeared in outlets such as Family Business Review, Human Resource Management Review, Journal of Business Logistics, Journal of Management, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Personnel Psychology, and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal.

Samangi Nanayakkara obtained her PhD from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. She is an information technology professional attached to a leading multinational Fintech company, which is headquartered in UAE, operating in Sri Lanka. Her PhD thesis investigated the influence of emotional intelligence and strategic management of technology on firm performance. Samangi also holds an MBA in Project Management from the Cardiff Metropolitan University and a BSc in Information Technology from the University of Middlesex in the United Kingdom. Her current research interests include emotional intelligence, corporate strategy, technological capability, and technological knowledge management. Samangi has worked in the information technology sector for over 10 years gaining experience in software quality assurance, project management, and handling stakeholders. As a veteran software quality assurance lead, she is passionate about advancing the quality of applications produced. In addition to her quality assurance lead role, she is involved in training sessions on emotional intelligence for her company staff.

Jennifer O'Connor has significant experience in research and project management. She completed an Undergraduate Degree majoring in Psychology, Sociology, and Human Movements, and a Post-graduate Certificate in Research Methodology at the University of Queensland (UQ). She is currently studying a Masters in Osteopathy at The University College of Osteopathy (formerly the BSO).

Ann Parkinson is a former Associate Professor with Henley Business School, University of Reading, UK, following a corporate and consulting career which started with teaching art and setting up a pottery business. Ann currently researches with the Henley Forum while supervising doctoral candidates, MSc, and MBA dissertations as a Senior Visiting Fellow in HRM and organizational behavior areas at the Business School. Her academic interests come from her practitioner experience working in change management and HR strategy in a large plc, working with organizations and individuals to develop their full potential through people practices and coaching at the individual level. This had fed into her own research interests in the areas of the psychological contract, employee engagement, workplace relationships, and the impact of context on the role of senior HR executives.

Katia Elizabeth Puente-Palacios is an Associate Professor at the University of Brasília (Unb). Her area of expertise, both for teaching and for research, pertains to the functioning of work teams, which she investigates primarily using quantitative methods, including multilevel analysis, regression analysis, and factor analysis. https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5598-8069

Erin Richard is an Associate Professor in the School of Leadership and Human Resource Development at Louisiana State University (LSU). She holds a PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Dr Richard's work focuses on intrapersonal and interpersonal processes related to emotion in the workplace. For example, she has published research examining emotional display rules in work contexts, the role of mood during performance goal revision, and the effects of leader behavior on employee emotion and resilience.

Linna Sai is an Assistant Professor in the School of Economics and Management at Inner Mongolia University, China. Prior to this, she worked at several universities in the United Kingdom, including the University of Huddersfield, Open University, and Keele University. She completed her PhD on understanding complex emotional responses to organizational change at the Open University, UK. Her research focuses on interests exploring emotions experienced by employees during changes. She is also interested in exploring challenges experienced by single women living alone and investigating individual and organizational impacts of the long working culture in Chinese organizations.

Dinesh Samarasinghe is currently serving as a Professor in the Department of Industrial Management, Faculty of Business, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. He served as the Head of the Department of Management of Technology, University of Moratuwa, from 2015 to 2020. He graduated from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka, securing a BSc in Marketing Management (Special) with a First-Class Honors' Division. He obtained his MBA and PhD in Marketing Management from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has published over 30 research papers in both internationally and locally reputed journals on Marketing and Management and presented conference papers at more than 20 international and local research symposia. He has been a research supervisor for MBA, MPhil, DBA, and PhD programs as well as a visiting academic for several foreign universities since 2012. His current teaching and research interests include Marketing, Consumer Behavior, Entrepreneurial Marketing, and Digital Marketing.

Ana Célia Araújo Simões is an Organizational Consultant and member of the research group Emotions, Feelings, and Affects in Work Contexts (emotrab.ufba.br) at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBa). Currently, she develops research on emotional labor, emotion regulation, intergroup emotions, and performance. Audrey Y. L. Teh holds a Master of Arts in Human Resources and Consulting from Lancaster University Management School, Lancaster University, UK, and a Bachelor of Psychology from HELP University, Malaysia. Audrey's research revolves around emotions in social and organizational contexts and in leader–follower interactions. She has a specific interest in studying emotional labor in leadership, leadership authenticity, and emotion regulation. Under the supervision of Distinguished Professor Ronald H. Humphrey, Audrey completed her Master's dissertation examining follower perceptions of leader authenticity and leader felt authenticity, and subsequent work-related outcomes.

Ashlea C. Troth is a Professor of Organizational Behavior in the Department of Employment Relations and Human Resources at the Griffith Business School. She is also the Deputy Director of the Centre for Work, Organization and Wellbeing (WOW). Ashlea gained her Master of Organizational Psychology at Griffith University and her PhD in Psychology at the University of Queensland. Dr Troth's research interests include multilevel and multimethod approaches to examining emotional regulation and emotional intelligence in workplaces, and the impact of these phenomena on well-being and performance outcomes. She is also interested in the day-to-day work experiences of frontline managers and the role of their emotional regulation strategies on well-being when performing a range of tasks. She has extensive consulting experience and has published in leading journals such as the Journal of Organizational Behavior, The Leadership Quarterly, and Human Resource Management.

Marisa Turesky is a PhD candidate in Urban Planning and Development at the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California. Her research addresses the roots of place-based urban inequities and the strategies that communities use to redistribute resources. She uses feminist and queer methodologies to study community development, housing, and urban services through oral histories, archival data, community-engaged research, spatial analysis, and social network analysis. Her dissertation explores how loneliness is shaped by identity and the built environment by examining whether gender and sexual orientation shape older lesbians' spatial and service needs in Los Angeles. By integrating community organizing practices into urban planning concepts and theories, she identifies connections between identity, power, and culture. Her work has urgent implications for contemporary debates in urban planning related to housing insecurity and community development challenges.

Vathsala Wickramasinghe holds a PhD in Human Resource Management from The University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and is currently a Senior Professor in the Department of Management of Technology at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. She was a Fulbright Research Fellow in the College of Business at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (USA), and a Commonwealth Research Fellow in the Department of Organization, Work and Technology at the Lancaster University Management School (UK). Vathsala's research focuses on human resource management, the human side of technology management, and labor market issues. Vathsala has published extensively in this field in leading international journals and has been secured funding from the British Academy (UK) for research. She served as the Director of Research of the University of Moratuwa, the Editor of Engineering Research Unit of the Faculty of Engineering, and the Director of Business Research Unit of the Faculty of Business at the University of Moratuwa.

About the Editors

Ashlea C. Troth is a Professor of Organizational Behavior in the Department of Employment Relations and Human Resources at the Griffith Business School. Ashlea gained her Master of Organizational Psychology at Griffith University and her PhD in Psychology at the University of Queensland. She is also interested in the day-to-day work experiences of frontline managers and the role of their emotional regulation strategies on well-being when performing a range of tasks. She has extensive consulting experience and has published in leading journals such as the Journal of Organizational Behavior, The Leadership Quarterly, and Human Resource Management.

Neal M. Ashkanasy, OAM, PhD, is Professor of Management at the UQ Business School (The University of Queensland, Australia). He studies emotion, leadership, culture, and ethical behavior. He has published over 100 refereed articles, including leading journals such as AMJ, AMR, and JAP. He served Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Organizational Behavior and Associate Editor for the Academy of Management Review and Academy of Management Learning and Education. He is a Fellow of several learned societies (ANZAM, APS, ASSA, BAM, SIOP, SMA) and the 2019 Academy of Management Managerial and Organizational Cognition Division Distinguished Scholar.

Ronald H. Humphrey is a Distinguished Professor of Leadership in the Lancaster University Management School (UK). Ron is dedicated to helping people develop an empathic and emotionally intelligent leadership style. He and his coauthors have gathered the largest amount of independent evidence on the validity of emotional intelligence in the workplace. He is among the top scholars in the world in his research areas as measured by the number of citations according to keywords listed on Google Scholar Profiles (for emotional labor, ranked third, for empathy, ranked sixth, for emotional intelligence, ranked 13th).
