ADVANCE survey: results available

Over a period of 18 months, the EU-funded ADVANCE-project has assessed the environmental performance of 65 European companies from the manufacturing sector in monetary terms.

The study uses the sustainable value approach, which allows the expression of non-financial performance i`n monetary terms. ADVANCE is the most comprehensive survey of this kind so far. The study applies for the first time the logic of financial analysis to corporate environmental performance, to assess the use of environmental resources in Euro terms.

The ADVANCE survey has been conducted by researchers of the academic and eco-rating project partners. The main goal of the survey was to assess the environmental performance of European companies of the manufacturing sector using the Sustainable Value approach for the years 2001-2003 and for a 2010 future scenario.

ADVANCE encompasses the following seven environmental resources:

(1) carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions;

(2) methane (CH4) emissions;

(3) nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions;

(4) sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions;

(5) volatile organic compounds;

(6) water use; and

(7) waste generation.

The detailed results of the 65 assessed companies as well as further information on the sustainable value approach can be found on the web site at: www.advance-project.org, where both a short version and the complete ADVANCE study are available to download.
